Charter for the Regional Pastoral Councils

February 27, 2007

The Archdiocesan Synod Implementation Office recently convened a meeting of the Charter Revision Committee to examine a few issues regarding the charter for the Regional Pastoral Councils.  The committee has met on several occasions to revise and update the original draft charter under which the pastoral councils have been operating.  After reviewing theological and canon law considerations, and the suggestions from several of the councils, the committee is recommending adoption of the proposed charter.

These councils are an outgrowth of the Archdiocesan Synod, and help implement the accountability provisions and those provisions of the Synod calling for more lay input in decision making, and cooperation among deacons, pastors, members of religious communities, bishops and laity.  The councils are chartered by the Archdiocese, so each council would continue to operate if a regional bishop were replaced.

However, none of the councils will succeed without constant oversight by the people represented.  So each council will develop it’s own strategy for replacing members at the end of their terms, requesting suggestions from parish councils, and instituting those councils at the request of pastors in cooperation with the Office of Parish Life.

Please take a look at the proposed charter.  There will be a vote on adoption at the OLA Region meeting on March 27.
