Our Lady of the Angels Pastoral Regional Council Report
May 5, 2007
- 1. PRIORITY : Pastoral and Finance Councils List for Region
Objective: Identify all parishes with and without councils operating within archdiocesan guidelines
Status: (Still processing results as this report is being prepared. Will provide whatever info. we have as of May 5; responses to the email survey still are trickling in and we continue to make calls.) - 2. PRIORITY: Make available regional council as a valuable resource for parishes needing to to establish or improve councils
Objective: Establish a team and offer facilitators to assist parishes in developing councils
Status: Pending finalized council list - 3. PRIORITY: Preparing for future parish Staffing Needs
Objective: Make recommendations based on Viability Study results re: local parish staffing
Status: Council studied results, made recommendations; deans have made their reports and the next step is to involve local parishes in the Regional Pastoral Staffing Plan, currently being drafted. - 4. PRIORITY: Establish regional council blog
Objective:- *Assist in promoting catechesis and personal formation by offering broadened access to knowledge about our faith and being called to proclaim the Kingdom of God
- *Promote awareness of regional council
- *Establish clear channel of communication between regional council and the faithful and those who have not heard the Good News
- *Facilitate inter-parish awareness and communication; nurture a broad community of faith
Status:
- *Implemented/Operational
- *Receiving 2,000-3,000 visits per month
- *Most visitors enter the blog through the Archdiocesan site or via a link from an email.
- *Will continue to monitor its usage stats
- *Through the efforts of Deacon Scott Palmer, pastors at the deanery level have been appraised of the regional council, its blog, and have been asked to pass the word to their parishioners
- 5. PRIORITY: Produce a regional council e-Newsletter
Objective: - *Aggressively broaden regional council’s outreach, especially awareness of its blog, through increased subscription to e-Newsletter
- *All of the above in #3
Status:
- *Inaugural issue disseminated May1
- *New issues will be disseminated periodically
- *Received two unsolicited signups within first two days
- *Disseminated to regional council members, parish email addresses, and some additional persons known to be active in the region
- *Received 10 new sign-ups in first three days since sending out the initial newsletter
- 6. PRIORITY: Promote greater knowledge and understanding about the Catholic Church’s
Social Justice teaching position, with particular emphasis on immigration
Objective: - *Council’s Social Justice committee will help council determine ways to implement the national Bishops’ Justice for Immigrants” program at the parish level
Status:
- *Social Justice committee chairperson has accepted appointment to represent Region on the Justice and Peace Commission.
- *Plans underway to use regional blog as one instrument for catechizing the faithful about Catholic teaching on peace and justice, with particular emphasis on the immigration issue
- 7. PRIORITY: Continuously provide members of the regional council information on issues facing and pastoral needs arising among our region’s faithful. Provide adequate time for discussion.
Objective: Arrange for a variety of guest speakers to appear before the council
Status: Guest speakers have included: Sr. Carol Quinlivan, CSJ Office of Parish Life; Maria Elena Uribe, Office of Synod Implementation; Sr. Mariabeth Larkin, SSS, One L.A. (immigration); Wally Arida, member of Archdiocesan Media Subcommittee; Sylvia Mendivil Salazar, Coordinator for Native American Concerns; Betty Odello re AB374 (assisted suicide bill)
And, finally, our region is approaching its second annual election of council and executive board members, scheduled for this month (May 2007).
