Presidential Act Funding Abortion

February 1, 2009

Letter from Bishop Clark:

On Saturday, January 24th I sent the following letter from President Obama regarding his signing of the presidential order lifting the restriction of the use of federal monies to fund abortions internationally.  I encourage all Catholics of our Region to also write to the President at “The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington D.C. 20500″ or to email him at www.whitehouse.gov/contact

President Obama,

I was dismayed and angered to learn that yesterday, by Presidential act, you overturned the standing restriction on the use of federal funds to support abortion services abroad.

During your campaign you vowed to work for unity within this nation and for an end to divisiveness.  By this one act along you have contributed to greater divisiveness among the American people.

As president, you should encourage responsibility among the citizens of the nation.  Instead your action encourages the type of irresponsibility whereby individuals fail to take thoughtful ownership of their own actions.  It becomes easier for individuals to opt for the simple solution of ending human life rather than to take responsibility for conceiving human life in the first place.

I find it morally reprehensible that any portion of my federal tax dollars should be used for funding abortion here or abroad.  In the future I shall remember that a vote for your election was inevitably a vote against innocent human lives seeing the light of day.  I had hope that it would not be so, but you have shattered that illusion all so quickly.

I intend to share my considered opinion with the 76 parishes and, potentially, with the 1.4 million Catholics for whom I am their local bishop.
